Frequently asked questions

WHAT HAPPENS AT MY FIRST APPOINTMENT?

At your first appointment, I will take a thorough history of your symptoms, including any previous treatment you have had, your medical history, information about your lifestyle and I will complete screening for any musculoskeletal, bladder or bowel problems.

Considering the nature of pelvic problems, I understand that some of the questions we ask may be of a sensitive nature. Please be reassured that my service is highly confidential and respects the very intimate nature of the problems you may wish to discuss with me.

As part of the examination, I may assess your posture, tummy muscles, pelvis, lower back and have a look at you performing relevant movements, activities or exercises.

If your problems are related to your pelvic floor, a digital internal vaginal or anal examination will be offered to assess the function of your pelvic floor muscles.  This would also include screening for prolapse.  Pelvic health physiotherapists are specialists in examining pelvic floor muscles internally.  If required, I will provide feedback to your GP regarding any medical concerns that are highlighted.

An internal examination will provide me with valuable information about your condition and your pelvic floor, including muscle strength, length, control, sensation, tone, scar tissue and pain.

This allows me to help plan an appropriate treatment plan. However, any examination is optional and you can decline or change your mind at any time.  You are also entitled to a chaperone: you are welcome to bring a friend or a family member to the consultation as an informal chaperone; if you would like a formal chaperone present,  please tell me prior to your appointment.

WHAT IF I NEED TO CHANGE AN APPOINTMENT?

Unfortunately missed or cancelled appointments can impact on the quality of the care I can provide to other clients.  Missed appointments also incur costs for me and, although I understand that appointments can be cancelled for genuine and unavoidable reasons, I have adopted the following cancellation policy:

Please give 24 hours notice that you cannot attend your appointment.

Any appointment cancelled or altered for any reason with less than 24 hours notice will be charged at 50% of the full fee.

If you miss an appointment without contacting me, this counts as a missed appointment and will incur the full appointment fee.

If you arrive late, I will do my best to deliver your full appointment, but please understand that this may not be possible and that the full appointment fee will still be charged.
